Origins of the Islamic State by Baladhuri

I wanted to read this book because I have run across this historian a few times when reasearching the Dhimmi laws.

However, I found  it to be a little disappointing. I thought it might contain new information that I have not yet come across but Baladhuri who comes later cites other historians to tell his version of the history, Ibn Athir, al-Tabari, and others. He includes a section at the end of each chapter called “other versions.”

One thing that was pleasantly surprising was his description of the founding of Mosul which in more than one way corroborates the archeological evidence in Foss. The use of the fort. The garrison type setting, the nearness to the river and its significance to the inhabitants.
