Israel’s star wars defense about to become reality

Israel is in a race against time as it  works toward defending their population of over eight million people from the growing Jihadist threats from Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon and most recently Syria.  In its desperation the Jewish State is inventing, testing and deploying some of the most advanced weaponry the world has ever seen.  2015 could be the year that warfare changes forever.

Israel is very quickly ending its testing for several very effective defensive weapon systems. Each designed for its own purpose and each complementing the other systems in Israel’s defense package. In a very short period of time Israel will be able to cast a full protective umbrella against missile warfare over its nation.

No wonder they call it “star wars” technology. Probably the most advanced is the Iron Beam, designed to get the next level down from Iron dome, rockets, mortars etc. Iron Dome cannot pick these up  because their trajectory is too low in the sky and their air time is too short.

Iron Beam employs a high intensity combat laser as a weapon. It is due to come on line in 2015. With these two innovations in warfare, Iron Dome and Iron Beam, all short range missiles, both high and low trajectory type weapons, will become obsolete.

Check this out. This is amazing

Iron Beam uses a fiber optic laser to destroy an airborne target within 4-5 seconds of firing. Whether acting as a stand-alone system or with external cueing as part of an air-defense system, a threat is detected by a surveillance system and tracked by vehicle platforms in order to engage. The main benefits of using a directed energy weapon over conventional missile interceptors are lower costs per shot, an unlimited magazine, lower operational costs, and less manpower.”

Iron Dome has turned out to be a huge success. Iron beam will add another visible platform of defense on the  battle field.

The Trophy system had its first battlefield real time tests in Operation Protective Edge last summer in Gaza.  A smaller platform than either Iron Dome or Iron Beam, the unit is mounted on vehicles protecting them from short range hand held rocket launhers.  Israel battle tested Trophy during the war but did not have enough to deploy on every vehicle. But, where it was present the results were very satisfying. “It Intercepted five anti-tank missiles aimed at armored IDF vehicles in Gaza. “  another unnamed IDF source said, “the Trophy system had pleasantly surprised us with its extreme precision, and unique operational capability. It answered the threat.”

When fully deployed the different versions  can platform onto anything with four wheels, protecting all mechanization in the IDF. Watch this demonstration of the Trophy system at work.

It’s a real life saver for those guys operating tanks. In any asymmetric confrontation men in tanks are sitting ducks to very cheap but deadly sorts of offensive small size weapons, RPGs, stingers, etc. It can literally save the lives of soldiers who deploy the system on their vehicles. It was an RPG which hit a M113 vehicle in Gaza last summer, killing seven soldiers inside. This could have been avoided if the vehicle had been outfitted with the Trophy system.

But, what about the other threats, those that are mid, longer range and intercontinental missiles, like those that can carry a nuclear payload. The kind that can hit Europe or Israel from Iran.

Two more systems also developed by Rafael industries specifically for that purpose since none of Israel’s threatening  neighbors employ such weapons.

David’s Sling, due to come online in 2016, will protect what Iron Dome cannot, the  longer  range ballistic missile, like what might come from Iran.

The Arrow system is able to intercept intercontinental missiles, and can take them out in the upper atmosphere which reduces chances of anyone friend or foe being exposed to nuclear fallout. This is also due to deploy late in 2015 or early 2016.

Like all the other defensive measures now being developed the arrow system is truly a remarkable feat of military engineering.

Once these systems become fully operational. Israel as a country will be protected. Like putting a transparent dome over the country like you see in Science fiction movies to remove any known threat from the sky. Science fiction is now very much science fact. Captain Kirk, never had it so good.

But, it’s a race against time. They must stay ahead of their enemies in Lebanon, the West Bank, and Gaza. At the same time they need to deploy all systems before Iran goes nuclear. That is the question at this time. Can Israel get this stuff operational and all but eliminate all threats including nuclear from Iran or anywhere else?  Obama’s team is doing nothing to slow Iran down. So, Israel must hurry.

Israel is ambitiously changing the look of warfare. And, there is more to come in the future. The technology’s defensive capabilities are endless. Consider this: With this technology what is stopping Israel from developing a portable unit that can be worn by the individual soldier and can deflect bullets up to say 50 caliber size? Can you imagine an army completely protected from every kind of weapon in the enemy’s arsenal.

Israel’s enemies have shown they can adapt and learn with each engagement. But, at some point their adaptation will run out. At that point they will quite literally not be able to fight. And, when that happens they will have to stand down or all die.

We are quickly heading to that scenario.
